This blog uses affiliate links, which may earn a commission for purchases made at no additional cost to you.
Are you ready to start a blog sharing what you love and earn an income? Have you been researching a side project but don't want to deal with too many people?
If you answered YES, know that I felt the same way.
My name is Mimi, and I run a busy drapery business called Elaine Thomas Interiors. I also work with a wellness company, which has helped me say bye-bye to over 20lbs of unwanted fat!
I shared that to say I'm busy!! However, I've set a goal to earn a specific amount of passive income, and after doing a ton of research, I found starting a blog was the way to go!!
Blogging is my quiet, enjoyable side project, and it's earning money that I don't have to touch. Yes, I could pay bills, but I'm currently investing my blogging income into a HYSA to build a 12-month emergency fund.
Wouldn't you want your passive income from blogging to earn more passive income?
What I love most about this blog you're on is the community I've built via my email list.
When someone visits my blog, they see a popup that says, “If you're always working towards being happier, healthier, and wealthier, then you're my kind of person. Let's stay connected! Join my email list.”
If it's their vibe, they sign up; if not, they click X and continue reading the content they came for.
It's such a good feeling to be able to help someone with content you create and be compensated at the same time. Not to mention having the best penpals replying to your newsletters who get you, you know?
Either way, you can find value in blogging during your free time, just like I do.

How to Start a WordPress Blog that Makes You Money
The three steps to starting your blog
Domain Name & Hosting
Installing WordPress
Making it Pretty
1. DOMAIN NAME AND HOSTING
This part is fun! The best way to explain a domain name is to think of it as your address. Every residence has an address, right? A physical home or office is 1234 Name Street. Online it's usually www.name.com OR https://name.com
What do you want the name of your domain to be? Do you want to grow a personal brand? If so, feel free to use your first and last name as I have.
You might prefer to just go by your first name and add someting fun before it. ElaineThomasInteriors.com, which is named after my parents, is another website of mine. Are your wheels turning yet?
Once you’ve thought of the names you like, then click here to go over to Bluehost to pick a plan. First, pick the plan, I recommend the lowest package if you will only have one blog. It's paid in one lump sum (under $50) instead of monthly, but it’ll definitely save you money.
Next choose your free domain, or secure the pricing now and decide on the domain name later.
2. INSTALLING WORDPRESS
Once you’ve completed your Bluehost registration you’ll need to go through the process of installing WordPress.
WordPress is a blogging software. It’s the software that I use for www.MimiZackery.com. The best part is that it’s VERY easy to use and it’s also very easy to install on your website. BOOM.
Here’s how:
Log into WordPress then find the Website Builders section. From there click on the WordPress logo.
On the next page click the “Install” button in the “Do it yourself FREE” section.
Click the “Check Domain” button.
Check the terms and conditions box and then click the “Install Now” button.
Once you get the message that says “Your install is complete!” you’ll want to click on the “View Credentials” button and write down your Admin URL, Username, and Password. You can change these to something more memorable later, but you’ll need them for your first time logging in.
Type your Admin URL into your web browser. You’ll see a login screen like the one below. Enter your Username and Password you copied down from the previous step.
You’ve officially logged into your blog. Congrats!
3. MAKING IT PRETTY
At this point, you officially have your very own blog! Yaaaaaaay… Is that great or what? Welcome to the blogging world, boo!
Before you jump into beautifying your blog. It’s time to pick your theme! WordPress has LOTS of free WordPress themes to choose from. I decided to purchase my theme since I was looking for something feminine and easy to use.
